Raw jute output to rise by 10%

2011-6-1
The production of raw jute in the current season is expected to be about ten percent higher than the previous year, according to experts. This is due to adequate availability of seeds and favourable weather conditions so far.

Raw jute production is expected to increase to about 11 million bales (in India, one bale of jute is equal to 180 kg) during 2011-12 from about 10 million bales in 2010-11.

The jute sowing season began in the first week of April and overall there has been an increase in sowing this year, in spite of the prices of seeds being about 40-50 percent higher.

Murshidabad and Nadia districts in West Bengal, which account for nearly 60 percent of the total jute production in the country, have witnessed favourable weather conditions until now.

The sowing is expected to increase to 950,000 hectares as the farmers are bullish about the prices of raw jute which hovered around Rs. 3,500 per quintal last year.
