London’s controversial congestion charge, under which car drivers have to pay £5 to enter a central zone, has had a serious impact on retail sales in the first few days of its implementation.
Retail monitoring company FootFall has reported that the number of shoppers in the congestion charging zone fell by an average of 12.4 per cent on Monday, hitting trade in designer boutiques and established high street retailers such as Marks & Spencer and Morgan.
Sales in some outlets fell by as much as 50 per cent compared with last year.
There are now concerns that the charge could have a long term impact on London's economy, with retail businesses in the heart of the capital losing out to shopping centres on the fringes of London.
