LEEDS – The Insiders Guide to Cotton and Sustainability, written by Simon Ferrigno and edited by John Mowbray, will be available for purchase from January 2012. Published by MCL Global, producers of Ecotextile News and Knitting Trade Journal, the 100 page booklet covers the ecological impact of cotton production and the environmental challenges that this presents.
The guidebook’s content will primarily focus on the details of the systems and standards of sustainable cotton and the importance of research and development into the growth of the organic cotton sector. The book will also include, the socially and environmentally problematic use of pesticides; latest statistics on cotton production and the implications of this on the future of the industry; and technical information on biotechnology and genetically-engineered cotton
Author Simon Ferrigno said of the upcoming publication, “Cotton and sustainability do not always seem to be obvious or comfortable bed fellows, and opportunities for gain and loss are many.” Ferrigno went on to state, “Do the proponents of sustainability always tell an honest story? The answer is probably not, just as some promoters of technology do not. Group interest and personal views colour opinion, to a greater or lesser degree depending on many factors such as philosophy, corporate culture and profit. In this Insider’s Guide to Cotton and Sustainability we aim to unravel these issues and present the facts as we see them.”
