Alexium International Group Limited (Alexium) announced that it has successfully developed an environmentally friendly flame retardant (FR) treatment for polyester-cotton fabric blends. This follows the commercial roll-out and developments related flame retardant treatments of nylon and nylon blends.
Early development stages on polyester-cotton blends indicate performance similar to Nycolon treatments, which are designed for nylon cotton fabric blends. "We are seeing the same no melt, no drip performance, excellent vertical flame test performance, and durability to launderings. We will continue to refine the treatment to address a broader list of customer applications and requirements," saidRobert Brookins, Alexium’s Chief Technology Officer.
Polyester fibers have continued to gain market share in global fiber supply, passing 50% in 2011 - making the polyester fiber market now substantially larger than that of cotton. For 2012, the textile industry estimates polyester consumption to rise to approximately 192 million bales. Polyester-cotton blends are used extensively across the globe for military and industrial work wear garments, providing an excellent blend of affordability, comfort, and performance. “We are pleased that we are quickly extending the FR product portfolio.
For many customers that are currently seeking environmentally friendly and effective FR treatments for their polyester cotton fabrics, we are eager to push this product into the marketplace.” stated Stefan Susta, Alexium’s Chief Operating Officer. This announcement follows recent news on Alexium’s other flame retardant treatments: Ascalon for nylon, and Nycolon, for nylon/cotton blends. Alexium is in the process of drafting patent applications and further strengthening the intellectual property portfolio.
