Azerbaijan to start polypropylene production in 2016

Azerbaijan, the largest country in the Caucasus region located at the crossroads of Western Asia and Eastern Europe, will start production of polypropylene in 2016, according to the draft socio-economic development plan for 2014-17, Azer News reported.

 

The initial polypropylene production in 2016 and 2017 will remain at 150,000 tons, the draft plan said.

 

Meanwhile, Azerbaijan’s propylene production is expected to shot up next year to 142,500 tons, compared to projected production of 44,200 tons this year, according to the draft plan.

 

For 2015, the document predicts Azerbaijan’s propylene production to grow to 163,500 tons, followed by a reduction in output to 24,500 tons and 23,400 tons, respectively in 2016 and 2017.

 

The draft law also forecasts a growth in the country’s polyethylene production from 105,300 tons this year to 131,800 tons in 2014. It expects the output to remain at 152,900 tons, 151,800 tons and 150,900 tons in 2015, 2016 and 2017, respectively.

 

The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) is the main company engaged in the manufacture of basic petrochemical products in Azerbaijan.

 

Earlier this month, SOCAR announced plans to construct a new petrochemical processing complex at the industrial complex of Sangachal Terminal in south Baku region of the country.

 

In May 2013, SOCAR announced plans to set up production of propylene at a new plant to be constructed at the SOCAR sub-company Azerikimya Production Union. 

 

SOCAR has three production divisions, two oil refineries and one gas processing plant, an oil tanker fleet, a deep water platform fabrication yard, two trusts, one institution, and 22 subdivisions.
