Pakistan garment industry will get separate SROs: MINTEX

2013-12-17
The Pakistan readymade garment industry would be soon getting separate Statutory Regulatory Orders (SROs), said Federal Secretary of Textile Industry Division Rukhsana Shah while addressing the Pakistan Readymade Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PRGMEA).

The Federal Secretary assured PRGMEA members that the matter of issuance of separate (SROs) would be taken up with Federal Bureau Revenue chairman as time has come to acknowledge the potential of the garment and textile sector, which is the backbone of the nation’s economy, reports Business Recorder.

PRGMEA members had urged the Federal Secretary to bring in several changes in policies for the garment industry of the country such as introducing liberal import policy for raw materials, simplifying  Ministry of Textile Industry (MINTEX) registration procedure, devise a mechanism to attest and record export invoices from Associations before Customs, release pending research and development (R&D) funds, introduce rationalized high mark up rates, reactivate implementation committee meeting, as well as ensure uninterrupted energy supplies to the industry.

In September 2013, the PRGMEA had urged the Government to make the Duty Tax Remission for Exports (DTRE) scheme practical and simple as the procedure of DTRE in Pakistan is complicated to the extent that only few of the value-added textile and apparel sector companies benefit from the scheme to increase the country’s export volumes.

The PRGMEA also suggested that the Government should allow apparel industry to import fabric under the SRO 492 Scheme, as the weaving industry of Pakistan is not being able to fulfill the present domestic apparel demand.
