2013 sees sustainable fashion grow in prominence

2013-12-31
Sustainable fashion, which started as a campaign to save the planet, made headway in 2013 as one of the leading trends among fashion lovers across the globe.

Sustainable fashion, which is created after fully considering the environmental and social impacts the clothes might have through its entire life span, is no more limited to the wardrobes of eminent personalities.

In fact, it has made a leeway in almost every major fashion week around the world. Even big labels have introduced their own versions of environment-friendly fashion lines.

Fashion designers like Nina Skarra, Kimberly Ovitz and Oskar Metsavaht have managed to make their mark by showcasing 100 percent biodegradable fabric and ecological material made designs in one of the recent editions of New York Fashion Week.

Other than catwalk events, premier online luxury fashion retailers like Net-A-Porter also came out in full support of eco-friendly styles. A few months back, the e-commerce site, in collaboration with sustainable fashion supporting project Green Carpet Challenge (GCC), had unveiled a capsule collection of environment-friendly attires.

The web store’s ethical range featured two pieces each from a set of five London-based leading designers, such as Christopher Bailey (the Chief Creative Officer of Burberry), Victoria Beckham, Scottish-born talent Christopher Kane, Erdem Moralioglu and French designer Roland Mouret.

Another example, promoting the fast catching trend, came through Swedish multinational retailer H&M’s Hollywood-inspired red carpet worthy line titled H&M’s Exclusive Conscious Collection, which was entirely made from eco-friendly materials like organic cotton, recycled polyester, polyamide and tencel.

Apart from designers and retailers creating ethical fashions, prominent international events like the Oscar Academy Awards also extended its support for environment-friendly designs. The 84th and 85th editions of Oscar’s ceremony conducted Red Carpet Green Dress contest, which saw actresses like Missi Pyle and Naomie Harris donning the winning ensembles at the prestigious award night.
