India : Ministry Plans To Bundle All Textile Exhibitions Into One |

In a bid to establish India as one of the leading global fashion hubs, the textile ministry is planning to consolidate over a dozen export promotion events under one mega event, reports Financial Express.
The new proposal is aimed at preparing the $12-billion domestic textile export industry to meet challenges and opportunities, which will emerge following lifting of the quota regime in the US and the European Union.
“The year 2004 is very crucial for India as the textile quota gets
lifted in the US and Europe,” textile minister Shahnawaz Hussain said, adding, “we have the potential to increase exports to $24 billion in a year and eventually to $50 billion if we pursue a focussed strategy. But if we lose focus this can even result in a dip from the present $12 billion level, which are fixed by quotas.”

‘Weaving the world of India’s high fashion’ (August 16-31), organised by the Central Cottage Industries Emporium (CCIE) here on Saturday.
He said his ministry is making an attempt to bring 13-14 different
export promotion bodies for different events like silk, denim and synthetic textile under the banner of one event ‘NIFT India Fashion Week’.
“We will be shortly finalising the plan,” he said. “We’re seeking the opinion of the Fashion Design Council and will involve various
designers. Usually we get 200-odd buyers from a single event. A much more comprehensive textile platform, in the lines of Paris or Milan fashion events, will attract a far more larger participation from international buyers”.
Hussain told FE China poses a huge competition to the country and that Pakistan also needs to be viewed seriously in cotton textiles. “With the Partition most of the cotton fields went to Pakistan. We are taking steps to address this by bringing more areas under cotton cultivation.”
Is there any room for co-operation with Pakistan in textiles? He said there is a plan to bring the handicraft artisans from both countries for an event under Dastkar Samiti at the CCIE. Hussain ruled out any major retail expansion of the emporium in the near future. “We would rather focus on the strengthening the existing network and bring more efficiencies,” he said.
Mr Hussain said the government will create a framework under NIFT India Fashion Week to promote local designers. “We need to create a strong brand image for our designers in order to command higher price for our labels overseas”.
