China : Cotton Production Expected To Hit 12 Year High |

According to the latest forecast by the Cotton and Ramie Bureau of National Federation of Supply and Marketing Cooperatives the local cotton production is expected to hit a 12-year-high of 5.5 million tons in 2003.
Although the unit yield level may be lower due to adverse weather
factors, the losses may be offset by the increase in the sowing area. The weather conditions are still unfavorable up to the present, but it still has several months before the harvest season.
Cotton import surged by nearly 27 times to reach 375,764 tons in the first five months of this year despite the impact of SARS epidemic, according to customs statistics. Industrial sources predicted earlier that the import speed would slow down in the rest of the year, partly due to the too rapid growth in import in the first five months and partly due to the new cotton that will be put on the market soon.
